5. The Buddhist Faith Rests on Equality, Not Distinctions

In other religions, all the members are in thrall to a single venerated figure. Buddhism is otherwise. Therefore, it proclaims, ‘All sentient beings possess buddha-nature.’ And, ‘All sentient beings are originally buddhas, and transmigration and nirvana are both but last night’s dreams.’ The objective of Buddhism is simply to make everyone equal to the Buddha. Now, by definition, autocratic political systems demand obedience, and constitutional political systems also demand obedience. Yet they are opposites, in that one demands our submission to others, making us obey without understanding, while the other demands our submission to ourselves, giving us the responsibility for our fate. Therefore, although other religions are good, and while in the end they can cultivate people of the Age of Chaos or the Age of Lesser Peace, only Buddhism can cultivate people through all three ages up to the Great Peace.12 Other religions may have some errors, but Buddhism is faultless.
